Summary[]

Barney, Aunt Bee, and Thelma Lou believe Andy and Helen are engaged.

Plot[]

Barney starts a rumor that Andy and Helen are about to be married when he spots Andy sneaking a kiss in the jewelry store where Helen is shopping for a gift for her niece. Barney proceeds to alert the entire town, and Aunt Bee decides to redecorate Andy's room--to make it more appropriate for a bride. When Andy and Helen are brought by the house for the surprise, they surprise everyone with the truth. Barney is the goat again, but Andy calms the crowd by telling them he'll pay them all back and give Bee the room she has always wanted.

Notes/Trivia[]

  • Thelma Lou mentions a movie with Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland titled "The Dashing Prince,” however, there was no movie ever created with this title.
  • Ron Howard's father appears in the ending of this episode as a party guest quibbling with Barney over the amount of his donation.
  • Melvin has put up disease signs on his property to scare away solicitors. Andy warns him to take the signs down.
  • Floyd and Gomer are seen in the same shot for about five seconds, the only time on the show that these two are seen talking together or even near each other. Gomer was Floyd's replacement after Floyd's actor had a stroke and left the show, then came back about ten episodes before Gomer joined the Marines.
    • They are also only seen in four episodes together.

Goofs[]

  • Aunt Bee warns Barney that the paint on the walls is still wet, but when the finished room is shown, it is entirely wallpapered.

Quotes[]

Deputy Barney Fife: [Barney trying to keep Andy from going home to dress for dinner] Well, it's a whim. Are you going to question a whim? You question a whim and you take the fun right out of it!
Sheriff Andy Taylor: Well, would it kill the whim if I just take a shower and put on some clean socks and underwear?
Deputy Barney Fife: Sure it will! It's not a whim anymore if you put on clean underwear!
Sheriff Andy Taylor: I don't understand it. But I guess a fellow shouldn't question when he's getting a free supper.
Deputy Barney Fife: That's right! Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Can you let me have $5?

Opie (Talking about women) "I guess I just don’t understand it Pa"
Andy "Well, when you grow up you won’t understand it either, so don’t worry about it."
