SummaryEdit

Opie joins a secret club called The Wildcats and is in charge of the candle they use in their meetings. After the barn where they meet burns down, he is accused by the owner of starting the fire.

PlotEdit

Opie is accepted as a member of a secret society called The Wildcats after he takes a sacred oath never to reveal the club secrets. Given the job of Keeper of "The Sacred Candle", Opie is fingered as the guilty party when the barn that the The Wildcats meets in is burned to the ground. The fire was actually started by the barn's owner, farmer and moonshiner Jubal Foster.

Not knowing this, Andy takes responsibility for the fire and is about to pay Foster for the value of the barn when Barney, having stumbled upon and unknowingly, consumed some of Foster's moonshine, staggers out drunk. Andy sees this and realizes that it was Jubal who started his own fire - blaming it on the boys instead. Andy arrests Jubal.

Trivia/NotesEdit

  • Everett Sloane guest stars. He also wrote the lyrics to the theme song of The Andy Griffith Show, "The Fishin' Hole", although the lyrics were never performed on the show.
  • Jubal Foster quotes a price of $450 to Andy for the cost to rebuild his barn. $450 in 1962 would be about $3,621.48 in 2017[1]
