Law and Order was, according to Andy, the "national sheriff's magazine". In the fifth season episode, "TV or Not TV", the publication was said to have featured the article, "Sheriff Without a Gun", an article centered on Andy's ability to keep Mayberry's crime rate "one of the lowest in the country" despite the sheriff's general refusal to wear a gun. The article would go on to inspire Hollywood adaptations—first an unproduced and ultimately fradulent TV series and later a released film. Much to Barney's chagrin, the publication's editors allowed a typo to pass in the article, calling him "Fise" rather than "Fife".
