Fred Stevens was a school boy around Opie's age who signs up and participates in a local Mayberry race. He participated in the 50 yard dash and the high hurdles. He was portrayed by Pat Coghlan.

It is unknown if he was actually a friend of Opie's, since Andy had to ask his name while he signed up in the courthouse.
